Taxis to be allowed back to Bank... maybe

The City of London Corporation has voted to allow taxis to access Bank junction for a trial period starting in Spring 2025, pending approval from Transport for London.

The Court of Common Council made the decision, and City Corporation Transport Officers will draft an experimental traffic order. This order will permit taxi access at all times while restricting other vehicles, including private hire cars, from 7am to 7pm, Monday to Friday.

Since 2017, only cyclists and buses have been allowed at the junction to improve safety and air quality. The trial will last up to 18 months, during which traffic, safety, and access impacts will be monitored, and a public consultation will be conducted. A final vote will determine if the changes become permanent.

Proponents argue that allowing zero-emission taxis will aid those unable to walk, cycle, or use public transport without compromising safety. The final phase of Bank Junction improvements, including footway widening and new crossings, will complete by June 30. Trees and planters will also be added as part of the City Corporation’s Climate Action Strategy.
